Vue du Bourg San-Nicolo

Vue du Bourg San-Nicolo

DESCRIPTION: View of Santorini, Greece, an island in the Aegean Sea. Detailed and picturesque view of windmills and a village with boats anchored in the background and small vessels of both Ottoman and European origin meeting offshore. Based on the following statement by the author I believe the town of San-Nicolo is situated at what is today called Oia on the island of Santorini, Greece: "The town of San-Nicolo is situated on the point of Santorini called Apanomeria and below it are huge rough burned rocks." Copperplate engraved etching from the late 18th century.

From from le Comte de Choiseul-Gouffier's "Voyage Pittoresque dans l'Empire Ottoman, en Grèce, dans la Troade, les îles de l'Archipel et sur les côtes de l'Asie-Mineure ". Printed before the French revolution with the royal license, "A.P.D.R." or "Avec Privilege Du Roi". Plate 15.
