An advertising-supported map designed and illustrated entirely by Joe Banana. Margins include text describing the Treasure Island area with statistics, information about the beaches and the educational institution Admiral Farragut Academy (AFA), a preparatory and boarding school. Among the facts in the margins is a statement that the map took Banana over 300 hours to draw and color.

In 1921 the Florida legislature created the latter four counties out of what had previously been DeSoto County. Possibly the earliest map containing the names of those four new counties. Map is a Fotoprint printed by Foote & Davies Co, Atlanta. <br></br> Published by William Elliott Dunwody (1882-1956) a businessman in Arcadia, Florida, the seat of DeSoto County. Dunwody had interests in real estate, ranching, and citrus farming, and was Chairman of the local Selective Service Board from 1941 to 1954. <br></br> Interesting in that before this Fotoprint was produced a base plat map was edited in manuscript (by Dunwody ?) to show the new county boundaries and features: roads, railroads, towns, lakes; and type of terrain: swamp and muck, pine, or prairie. This item is a product of that enhancement made just after the new counties were created. <br></br> It is ironic that at center left, in one of the marked swampy areas, a manuscript notation is made: <b>"Red dot within green circle represents location your 10 acres."</b> Lucky guy! Key features include the Kissimmee River, Lake Istokpoga, Lake Okeechobee, Charlotte Harbor, and two airbases built in 1917 during early WWI: Carlstrom Field, and Dorr Field.

This original, large (34" x 24") blueprint from 1896 shows Lancaster, PA streets along with the route of the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad passenger line and the Lancaster cut off freight line, both owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. Additional key features include the Lancaster PRR station, the city limits, Big Conestoga Creek (Conestoga River), Dillersville, and two reservoirs. <br></br> The Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) was established in 1846, with headquarters in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. By 1882, the Pennsylvania Railroad had become the largest railroad by traffic and revenue, and the largest corporation in the world. The iconic "Muscle Shoals Sound," born in the city's legendary recording studios, has left an indelible mark on genres ranging from soul and R&B to rock and country. <br><br> But a century ago, Muscle Shoals was the epicenter of a different kind of boom - one fueled by grand industrial ambitions and the promise of a brighter future. <br><br> In the 1920s, automotive pioneer Henry Ford set his sights on transforming the sleepy Alabama town into a bustling metropolis to rival Detroit (1). The centerpiece of this vision was the Wilson Dam, a hydroelectric marvel that would provide cheap, abundant power to fuel the growth of industry. <br><br> Sensing an opportunity, New York City developers Howell and Graves began heavily promoting Muscle Shoals as the "City of Unlimited Opportunity." This advertising brochure, circa 1925, with a rare birds-eye view map showcases their grand plans. The map, which stretches from Seven Mile Island to the Wilson Dam, depicts a thriving industrial landscape, with the Tennessee River winding majestically in the background. <br><br> At the time, nitrate plants were the region's biggest employers, and the promise of readily available electricity was expected to lure even more manufacturers to the area. Howell and Graves themselves invested heavily in the city's future, constructing the first City Hall, homes, and the Howell and Graves Jr. High School, which still stands today as a Board of Education building. <br><br> However, the grand vision for Muscle Shoals was not to be. Much of the infrastructure built by Howell and Graves went unused as the Great Depression stifled the city's growth. The promised industrial boom never materialized, and Muscle Shoals settled into a quieter existence. <br><br>

The volcano's crater is a popular destination for hiking, stargazing, and watching the sunrise. In 1916, Haleakala National Park was established to protect the unique volcanic landscape and the endemic species that inhabit the area. <br><br>
