DESCRIPTION: Gorgeous copperplate re-strike engraving of the title page to Bellin's sea-atlas, the Hydrographie Francoise. With the circular stamp of the Depot de la Marine. Undated. Price One and one-half francs. No. 1.

We believe the engraving is an early 20th century re-strike from the original copper plate produced at the French Chalcographie du Louvre. La Chalcographie du Louvre is a repository, consisting of more that 13,000 original plates from the Louvre's archives, housed upstairs above the Louvre's Paris galleries . Upon request visitors can have an engraving produced from the original plate on museum-quality paper by a master printer. V.196.

Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772)

Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was a prominent French hydrographer and geographer, recognized for his significant contributions to the development of cartography. For over half a century, Bellin served as the first Ingénieur de la Marine of the Depot des cartes et plans de la Marine (the French Hydrographic Office) and was appointed Official Hydrographer to the French King. His expertise and precision led to the production of thousands of significant nautical charts and maps, enhancing maritime navigation.

Either one or two mortars were usually placed aboard a bomb vessel which could be one of two types of vessels, either a specially built ketch (ketch: a two-masted, fore-and-aft-rigged sailboat with a mizzenmast smaller than the foremast) or, as is the case here, a converted three-masted vessel where the foremast had been removed, to provide a good deck space forward for the mortars. <BR> </BR> As a Captain in France's Corps des Galere, de Passebon was intimately familiar with this type ship and he is reported to have participated during the French bombardment of Genoa in 1684 , aboard the "la Perle" . </BR> The cannon are decorated with crown and globe containing three fleur-de-lis, figures representing the French royal coat of arms in the eighteenth century. From Diderot's "Encyclopédie ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers, par une Société de Gens de lettres. Total dimensions with mat about 16.5" W x 19.5" H. De Fer was a prolific producer of maps and prints who among other honors, was appointed as official geographer to the Spanish King in 1702. Published in de Fer's atlas: "Les Costes de France sur l'Océan et la Mer Mediterranee..." with 32 engraved charts. That work was a re-issue of Christophe Tassin's 1634 work "Cartes Generale et Particulieres de toutes le costes de France tant de la mer Oceane que Mediterranee".
