DESCRIPTION: Large, detailed, panoramic view of coastal Maine north of Portland, including Casco Bay. Neat, 1950's re-print of a view first published by Walker Lithograph at the end of the 19th century, and reproduced in the mid-1950's. This folding birds-eye view highlights dozens of islands, coves, lighthouses, railroad, ferry routes, and other points of nautical interest. Shows the locations of Fort Williams, Portland Head, Fort Preble, Fort Leavitt, Ft. McKinley, Casco Castle, Freeport Landing, and the Portland Yacht Club. Folds to 3 1/2" x 6 1/2".

Named features include Cape Elizabeth, Portland Head light, Cushing Island, Great Diamond Island, Long Island, Great Chebeague Island, Presumpscot River, Mt. Shows large and small railways some of which are now abandoned. <br></br> This map could be of interest for anyone with an interest in the Rails to Trails Conservancy or the Great American Rail-Trail initiative (a coast-to-coast multi-use trail of over 3,700 miles). Portions of this map includes abandoned tracks that are incorporated into that coast-to-coast trail including the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad (C. M. St. P and P.), now a part of the <b>Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail</b>. <br></br> Great detail and names of mountains in the Cascades Range including Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, Mount Adams, and Mount Hood. Coverage extends past Seattle to Everett, Washington. <br></br> The Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company operated from 1896 after a consolidation of several smaller railroads. Union Pacific (UP) purchased a majority stake of the line in 1898. In 1910 the line became a subsidiary of UP titled the <b>Oregon–Washington Railroad and Navigation Company.</b> Union Pacific formally absorbed the smaller railway into its system in 1936. <br></br> Dated 1933 based on 2 other similar items purchased in the same lot, each from the Chief Engineer's Office. <br></br> In the 1930's, minor abandonments of the company's Oregon lines included the partial abandonment of the line to Homestead, as well as joint operation with the Spokane, Portland & Seattle of the Oregon Trunk railroad line from the Columbia River south to Bend. <br></br> Drawn by REB. A rare and informative map of the waterfront at south Rockland, Maine with a detailed record of shoreline and structures as they existed 150 years ago. <br></br> A few of the key features Rose noted include Mechanic Street, two marine railways and a marine railway wharf, apparently part of Snow Farwell & Co. The two octagonal building above the railways are almost certainly sheds for horse-powered winches. At bottom left a wharf surrounds <br></br> Snow Shipbuilding was founded in 1862 by Captain Israel Snow. It was located at the end of Mechanic Street, adjacent to the Cobb, Butler yard. The Snow family sold it to General Seafoods after WWII. The western half is now the Sail, Power and Steam Museum, while the eastern half is still active as Rockland Marine. <br></br> Location fronts on Owl's Head Bay; West Penobscot Bay. Details	1908	Oregon-Railroad-and-Navigation-Company	Route-map-T--J--Potter-Steamer-between-Portland-and-North-Long-Beach	Two rare, unrecorded advertising maps on a single sheet:<br> 1) Route of the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company's Excursion Steamer "T. J. Potter" between Portland and North (Long) Beach. Contains an inset drawing of the Steamer T. J. Potter with a domed wheelhouse and flagpole.<br> 2) Map of the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company Along the Columbia River, Portland to Celilo Falls. One half-page on verso. <br></br> Undated but ca. 1908 based on a advertisement for the excursion steamer T.J. Potter on the six-hour summer run (every day except Sunday) on the Columbia River between Portland, Oregon and North Beach, Washington promoted as "One of the Most Attractive Beach Resorts on the North Pacific Coast." <br></br> The T. J. Potter was a wooden side-wheel paddle steamer owned by the Oregon Railway and Navigation Company. The Potter operated on the Columbia River and Puget Sound between 1888 and 1916, and was considered for a time to be the fastest side-wheel steamer in the Northwest U. S. A. Rebuilt in 1901, the Potter then sported a dome with a flagpole instead of a flat roof. By the 1920's the Potter had been withdrawn from passenger service and was used as a quarter boat for construction crews before she was abandoned near Astoria, Washington.
