Pictorial Map of Cape Cod with Historic Ships and Coastal Scenes by Consuelo Joerns

Pictorial Map of Cape Cod with Historic Ships and Coastal Scenes by Consuelo Joerns

DESCRIPTION: Detailed black-and-white pictorial map of Cape Cod by illustrator Consuelo Joerns ca. 1978, combining the peninsula's towns and landmarks with its maritime heritage. The Cape extends from Falmouth and Woods Hole to Provincetown, with town boundaries, churches, historic houses, windmills, and lighthouses depicted across the land.

Numerous sailing vessels occupy Cape Cod Bay, Nantucket Sound, and the Atlantic, their hulls and rigging set against a densely patterned sea. Named vessels include the research ship Atlantis near Woods Hole and the Stone Horse lightship southeast of Monomoy. A compass rose accompanies the title cartouche, while surrounding panels illustrate coastal scenery, buildings, boats, and a windmill.

The outer border carries archaically spelled passages describing the Cape's wildlife and abundant fisheries, including the statement that the voyagers "tooke great store of cod fish," explaining the origin of its English name. These historical references and the closely worked pen-and-ink style give the map the appearance of an earlier maritime print.

Consuelo Joerns (1925-2020) was an American painter, illustrator, children's book author, and pictorial mapmaker. Born in Evanston, Illinois, and raised in Chicago, she attended Mills College and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. At Chicago's Francis W. Parker School she met Edward Gorey, beginning a lifelong friendship. Her paintings were exhibited in France, Chicago, and New York.

A longtime resident of Martha's Vineyard, Joerns produced maritime paintings and ink drawings, as well as pictorial maps of Martha's Vineyard and Cape Cod. Her children's books include The Forgotten Bear, The Foggy Rescue, and The Midnight Castle. Extended visits to Japan influenced her later painting. She settled in Wiscasset, Maine, in 2000 and continued exhibiting into her nineties.
