A gem! This small, highly-detailed antique copperplate engraving by the French artist Jean-Jerome Baugean published circa 1814 depicts a Danish sailing vessel at anchor loading large blocks of marble from a lighter. The mizzen sail is set, presumably to help maintain the ship's position while loading.

This engraving is from a series of 72 fine antique engravings of merchant and naval vessels created and engraved by Baugean (1764-1830)- "Collection de Toutes les Especes de Batimens de Guerre et de Batimens Marchard." Baugean's engravings are notable for their accuracy and detail.

A bombarde relied on mortars mounted near the bow with high elevation to lob exploding shells down on the enemy. Early French bomb-vessels had two mortars placed side-by-side in the bow that were aimed while at anchor by pulling in or letting out a spring anchor. The heavy armament explains the wide and somewhat barge-like bow depicted in this engraving. The extra width would have been needed to support the weight of the mortars.<BR> </BR> This engraving is from a series of 72 fine antique prints of merchant and naval vessels created and engraved by Baugean (1764-1830) in the series: "Collection de Toutes les Especes de Batimens de Guerre et de Batimens Marchard." (Galley Festival) held annually in Marseilles, France which was the home port of the Galley Corps during the reign of Louis XIV and Louis XV. At the time this engraving was produced the Galley Corps was in decline but the pomp and grandeur continued. The print shows several dozen galleys, moored stern-first as is the custom in that area, firing a tribute from cannon. The work is full of minute details of the festivities on shore among the onlookers and participants. <BR> </BR> Jacques Rigaud (1680-1754) was a French draftsman, artist, and engraver who worked for a time at the Arsenal in Marseille, home to the galley fleet. His first known work is "The View from the Fortress of Toulon" published in 1707. Rigaud was in Marseille during the great plague of 1720 and is well known for his prints of that event as well as for his series of engravings of the royal houses of France. Plate 3.

This print was engraved by Claude Randon, as part of a volume of nautical architecture plates first published from Marseille where, in the late 17th century the arsenal was home port to the galley service of Louis XIV.<BR> </BR> <a style="color:#9BAFCB" rel="nofollow" href= "/SbonskiPassebonBackground.aspx">View other Sbonski de Passebon engravings</a> <BR> </BR> De Passebon was stationed at Marseilles as a Lieutenant in the Corps des Galeres during the period that he produced the drawing from which this antique print was engraved. Therefore this plate, drawn from first-hand observation, is perhaps the best record of the Patronne available.
