The demi-galere pictured carried 5 cannon, mounted at the bow and about 9 oars on each side. A full-sized galley might be armed with a dozen or more cannon and be fitted with banks of 24 oars to both port and starboard. <BR> </BR> This demi galere is noteworthy because of the three masts with lateen sails. A bombarde relied on mortars mounted near the bow with high elevation to lob exploding shells down on the enemy. Early French bomb-vessels had two mortars placed side-by-side in the bow that were aimed while at anchor by pulling in or letting out a spring anchor. The heavy armament explains the wide and somewhat barge-like bow depicted in this engraving. According to John Harland: <dir class="indenttextblock">"The mizzen topsail is set, and the wind-sail just seen abaft the fore mast was used in hot weather to ventiilate the gundeck; the crew have washed their hammocks, and these have been triced up to dry… This is one of the smaller frigates, possibly the Boston." According to John Harland: <dir class="indenttextblock">"Baugean does not comment on the rigs, but from right to left they are a schooner, tartane, and what seems to be an armed pinque. The last is airing both its lateen and square sails. This ensemble emphasizes the fact that although northern European rigs, like the schooner, were to be found in the Mediterranean, there were a number of rigs - and indeed hull forms - unique to that sea."
