Rare anonymous blueprint or cyanotype map of Annapolis, Maryland. Coverage includes the Severn River, Spar Creek, College Creek and the grounds of the United States Naval Academy. Includes an area of "proposed extension of Academy grounds." Dated within to 1940.

The illustration and quotation on this trade card were not unique to John Cosgrove but rather part of a stock design widely used by 19th-century printers who specialized in producing humorous or sentimental advertising cards. Lithographers commonly kept catalogs of ready-made comic scenes—like this seaside mother-and-child vignette with the line “It’s a wise child that knows its own mother at the sea side”—which merchants could customize by adding their own business imprint below. In this case, the printer simply inserted Cosgrove’s name, trade description, and Poydras Market address into the blank advertising panel at the bottom, allowing a small New Orleans fish dealer to benefit from professionally printed imagery at a fraction of the cost of commissioning original artwork.

This 1838 edition predates the regular annual series and is not always listed among the later “official” manuals (which began in 1841), but bibliographers recognize it as the first appearance of Valentine’s work in this format. <br><br>

The plotted lots are numbered, and circular survey reference marks (with numbers inside) indicate the original survey tracts or blocks. <br><br> Medina lake forms a broad crescent stretching west to east, measuring about 18 miles in length and up to 3 miles across at its widest point. It is impounded by Medina Dam at the southern end—a structure that, when completed in 1913, was the largest concrete dam in the United States and the fourth largest dam overall.
