DESCRIPTION: Antique folding map of Paris, France and its environs by the French war department originally published in 1839. This revised edition from 1857 has an emphasis on the Seine river and includes Versailles. Backed with coarse brown linen, the map is divided into eight horizontal sections and 4 vertical sections and folds to a compact 6" x 8 3/4".

The antique map is annotated at bottom with a circular, blue seller's stamp from "E. Andriveau-Goujon - Geographe" and an oval blind-stamp by the "Depot de la Guerre". Scale 1:40,000. When folded the front cover contains a decorative black and white sticker from E. Andriveau-Goujon Geographe, editeur, Rue du Bac 21, Paris . The sticker details the many specialties of his shop including: globes, spheres, Atlas de Choix, and cartes de parties du monde.

CONDITION: Good. Strong imprint. Intact with a few small cracks in the linen, none compromising the maps structural integrity. Two holes (one corner torn) in upper corners for previous mounting. Tear affects only a small part of the upper margin, far form neatline.

The smaller-scale main map covers the Seine's course from Paris, past numerous tributaries, past Pistres (modern Pîtres), to Pont de l'Arche. The bridge at Pont de l'Arche was erected in the 9th century by Charles the Bald who believed that a fortified bridge in that location would prevent Viking longships from sailing upriver. <br></br> A larger inset map at larger scale shows the river flowing from Pistres, with a "Palais Royal" to Rouen with greater detail given to the topography and to depictions of the many islands inhabiting the river. About the earliest available advertisement for French railroads (chemin de fer) and one of 10 competing railway proposals submitted to the French Parliament between 1835 and 1847. <br></br> With a fine detailed drawing of a 1838 coal-powered steam engine chugging along with wagons carrying passengers, horses and cattle, and agricultural goods. Gentleman passengers in top hats casually observe the countryside from seats atop the passenger car. Workers in the coal car appear appropriately fatigued. <br></br> The first locomotive-powered railway in France, the Paris to St. Germain opened in 1837 followed immediately by a lack of interest in financing railway projects by the large French banks. This map advertised the potential of the Paris to Havre railway, probably an attempt to reach capital sources outside the French banking industry. Shows two train routes. The first route, in blue, represented the "Chemin par les Plateaux" while the uncolored set of parallel lines denoted the "Project par la Valee." <br></br> Lithograph on laid paper with Blauw watermark.
