DESCRIPTION: A lively, detail-packed poster celebrating the 1984 Democratic National Convention (San Francisco, July 16–19). Drawn by beloved Bay Area cartoonist Phil Frank, the image bursts with local landmarks—the Transamerica Pyramid, Ferry Building, Golden Gate & Bay Bridges, Chinatown, North Beach, Ghirardelli Square—and hundreds of witty captions, delegates, and sight gags in Frank’s warm, satirical style. Political figures (e.g., Mondale/Hart/Jackson) appear amid a citywide carnival of balloons, tug boats, and cable cars.
Signed and dated in the image “Phil Frank 1984.” A fine piece of San Francisco ephemera at the intersection of political history, cartoon art, and pictorial city maps. Copyright © 1984 Interprint Publications, San Francisco-Innovative Communications.
Phil Frank (1943 – 2007)
Phil Frank was a San Francisco cartoonist and illustrator best known for his long-running comic strip Farley in the San Francisco Chronicle. Born in Chicago and trained as an illustrator, Frank moved west in the 1970s, quickly becoming one of the city’s most recognizable humorists. His pen blended civic affection with sharp observation, turning San Francisco’s neighborhoods, politics, and quirks into a friendly satire beloved by locals. Beyond his daily strips, he produced illustrated maps, posters, and books celebrating the Bay Area’s character and landscape, earning a devoted following that endures well after his death in 2007.
