Map of the Pensacola Sea in Florida

Map of the Pensacola Sea in Florida

DESCRIPTION: Original 1931 geological map of Florida showing the extent of the so-called "Pensacola Sea," prepared for the Florida State Geological Survey under State Geologist Herman Gunter and drawn by glacial geologist Frank Leverett. Issued as a folding plate from Bulletin No. 7, The Pensacola Terrace and Associated Beaches and Bars in Florida, the sheet covers the entire state by counties, with coastal lowlands along the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean shaded in blue to indicate areas thought to have been drowned during a late Pleistocene high stand of sea level, the Pensacola stage approximately 75,000 to 125,000 years ago.

Printed at a scale of 1:1,615,680, the map includes county boundaries, major rivers, and principal towns. As an early statewide synthesis of old beaches, Leverett's map documents how Florida geologists in the 1930s interpreted ancient shorelines and coastal plains, linking modern settlement patterns to former shorelines now stranded well above present sea level.

Frank Leverett (1859-1943) was born in Denmark, Iowa, and after initially training to become a farmer, developed an interest in geology while teaching at Denmark Academy. He studied at Colorado College and Iowa State College, graduating with a bachelor of science in 1885, then joined the U.S. Geological Survey. He worked his way up from assistant to senior geologist (1886-1929) and served as a lecturer in glacial geology at the University of Michigan from 1909 to 1929.

Working at a time when few topographic base maps existed, Leverett mapped glacial deposits and landforms with unprecedented precision and detail, focusing almost exclusively on the glacial geology of the north-central United States. At the time of his death, he ranked first among U.S. Geological Survey members in terms of reports published—some 170 titles—and his greatest contribution was the historical framework and evidence of multiple glaciation that emerged from his work. The Leverett Glacier in Antarctica was discovered in 1929 and named in his honor by the Byrd Antarctic Expedition.
