Rare Pictorial Map of the Idaho Panhandle and Northwest Montana

Lakes of the Emerald Empire: A Merry Map of the Idaho Panhandle and N.W. Montana

DESCRIPTION: Rare pictorial map of northern Idaho and northwestern Montana, drawn by Marie McLean and lithographed by Ross Hall Scenics of Sandpoint, Idaho in 1966. The map celebrates the region's lakes, mountains, forests, historic sites, and recreational attractions, extending from the Canadian border south to the Coeur d'Alene area.

The map features numerous illustrations of wildlife, skiers, boats, and outdoor activities, with particular attention to the Selkirk and Purcell Mountains and the lakes of the Idaho Panhandle. Historical annotations recall the region's exploration and settlement, while references to the 1965 Girl Scout Roundup and the planned 1967 Boy Scout World Jamboree at Farragut reflect the area's growing importance as a recreational destination. A panoramic lakeside scene along the lower border emphasizes the region's appeal to tourists and vacationers.

Copyrighted March 18, 1966, the map is an attractive example of mid-20th-century American promotional cartography, combining regional history, geography, and whimsical illustrations to celebrate the natural attractions of the inland Northwest.

Marie McLean was an American artist and pictorial mapmaker associated with Sandpoint, Idaho, whose work documented the lakes, mountains, and recreational attractions of the northern Idaho region. Working under the name McLean Studio, she produced illustrated maps combining geographical information, local history, and decorative artwork. Her earlier "Lake Pend d'Oreille in Bonner and Kootenai Co's., Idaho, U.S.A. (A Merry Map)" was registered for copyright on May 30, 1956. Her 1966 "Lakes of the Emerald Empire" continued this approach, presenting the Idaho Panhandle and northwestern Montana through illustrations celebrating the region's scenery, history, and outdoor recreation. Biographical details concerning McLean's life and artistic training remain limited.
