Original small engraved nautical chart of the Balearic islands of Ibiza and Formentera which now belong to an autonomous unit and province of Spain. Shows the port and the town of Elvissa which is labeled "Yvice". This chart is one of 37 port plans published by Henry Michelot and Laurens Bremond ca. 1730 in their atlas of small scale Mediterranean ports: "Recueil de Plusieurs Plans de Ports et Rades de la Mer Mediterranée" .

Contains a carefully colored compass rose.

Henry Michelot and Laurens Bremond

Henri Michelot was an early 18th century French cartographer with a close connection to the sea. Michelot, self-described Hydrographer and Pilot of the Galere Royale or Royal Galley, was then part of a corps of approximately 40 galleys (galeres) or oared sailing vessels stationed in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic coast. In the Mediterranean, galleys were based primarily at the arsenal in Marseilles, France. Galleys were typically rigged with the triangular Mediterranean "Lateen" sail(s).

Bookseller and royal hydrographer Laurent Bremond "Hydrographe du Roi et de la Ville" sold charts and maritime books from his establishment in Marseille located near the port at the corner of Reboul street ( "au Coin de Reboul").

The output of Michelot and Bremond, from approximately 1715 through 1730 consisted of an atlas of 16 small-scale charts, a port book of 37 large-scale charts, and a coast pilot of the Mediterranean: "Portulan de la Mer Mediterranee, ou Guide des Pilotes Cotiers." Their work (the "Portulan" was published in several languages at least until 1805) and was a primary source of navigational information about the Mediterranean for years. The charts of Michelot and Bremond were often copied by others such as Kitchin and Roux.

The port pass, dated within at 1833, includes a large anchorage plan with numerous soundings for the port for Tarragona, with sailing directions in three languages [1] and a description of the ship's cargo of wine and aguardiente. Spanish text. <br></br> Rare. No holdings of this item are listed in WorldCat and only one record of a sale of a similar document, from 1820. <br></br> Bearing the armorial seal of Tarragona, Spain, the document is topped with a view of the walled city of Tarragona below a Latin scroll touting the safety and health of "Tarraco" [2]. At bottom the signers specify the pass applies specifically to the United States Bergantine (Brig) Hancok (Hancock ?), captained by Ebenezer L. Higgins [3], with a crew of eight sailors. Dated to February 12, 1833 the pass specifies the cargo exported from Tarragona to Brazil consisted of "vino tinto" (red wine), "aguardiente refinado" (brandy) and "aguardiente anisado" (an anise-flavored liqueur popular today in Colombia) [4]. <br></br> SOURCES: <br> [1] "Cape Salou bears from the point of the mole to the So[luth] 5° O. 7 miles distant & Cape Gros or Pointe de la Mora to the east 12° 30' N. 6 1/2 miles distant.
