DESCRIPTION: Stunning original first-edition (collector's edition) pictorial birds-eye map of Cayo Hueso or Key West, Florida printed on fine cream-colored laid paper with bottom deckle edge. Uncolored. Designed, executed, produced and copyrighted by Arthur Suchy ca. 1940. Excellent detail on over 70 key locations that Suchy identifies alphabetically and numerically on a key that surrounds the view including:
- Cigar factories
- Sponge docks
- P.A.A. Airport
- Turtle crawls
- Fish market
- Warbler (helpful tug)
- Pepe's coffee shop
- Delmonico's
- Key West radio station
Arthur Bartholomew Suchy (1901 - 1995) produced two editions of his famous map of Cayo Hueso, the first edition, larger and with full hand color was produced in a limited edition of 100 copies dated to 1940 and the second and smaller edition printed in red ink to 1941. [1] Suchy originally printed 125 copies of the first edition and would have the maps colored as orders came in. He intended to use the other 25 copies for insure against damage, shrinkage, or potential issues in coloring and left instructions to have any of the twenty-five extra copies remaining destroyed after his death.
Includes numerous historical notes about Key West.
Suchy was issued a copyright for the first edition on Dec. 14, 1938. He filed a renewal application on Nov. 17, 1966.
