Chart of the Entrance to Timballier Island Louisiana

Chart of the Entrance to Timballier (Timbalier) Bay, Louisiana

DESCRIPTION: 1853 engraved nautical chart of Grand Pass at the entrance to Timbalier Bay, Louisiana, prepared by F. H. Gerdes under U.S. Coast Survey superintendent A. D. Bache. The chart, likely from a contemporaneous Cosat Survey chart book, depicts Timbalier Island and East Timbalier Island, with their irregular shorelines, marshes, and tidal inlets bordering the Gulf of Mexico.

Numerous depth soundings define the approach across the offshore bar and through Grand Pass. Shoals, the designated sailing line, a prominent compass rose, and accompanying sailing directions emphasize the chart's practical navigational purpose. Scales provide distances in statute and nautical miles. Titled Preliminary Reconnaissance of Grand Pass, Entrance to Timbalier Bay, Louisiana.

Sailing directions include: "“Run for the Point of the West beach N.W. by W. over the Bar on this course and keep on it 'till within 300 yards of the beach, then pass the Point and haul up N.N.W.1/2W. Anchor in 14 feet.”
