DESCRIPTION: Rare detailed U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey chart of southwest Florida, covering San Carlos Bay northward to Lemon Bay and including Charlotte Harbor, Pine Island Sound, Sanibel and Captiva islands, and the Caloosahatchee River to Fort Myers. The September 1895 publication imprint names W. W. Duffield as superintendent.
Dense soundings, shoals, tidal flats, channels, navigational lights, and seabed descriptions record the shallow coastal waters and approaches to the region's harbors. Shoreline vegetation, scattered settlements, wharves, and riverfront features provide a detailed view of the coast before its extensive twentieth-century development. Multiple compass roses, a light table, tidal information, and explanatory notes support the chart's practical navigational purpose.
A distinctive feature of this example is a handwritten sailing note beside the title: "Pine Island Sound. Passage is buoyed from Sanibel Light to Boca Grande. Leave black buoys to Westward & Red to East." The annotation supplements the printed hydrography with concise local passage instructions, suggesting use as a working navigational chart.
The chart preserves an early record of the waterways connecting Fort Myers, the barrier islands, and Charlotte Harbor. Its detailed delineation of undeveloped shores and estuarine channels makes it useful for studying the region's maritime history and subsequent coastal transformation.
