1984 Pictorial Map of Siesta Key, Florida

DESCRIPTION: Colorful 1984 bird's-eye advertising map of Siesta Key, Florida, published by West House of Maps, Sarasota, with artwork attributed to Harry A. West. The island is depicted between the Gulf of Mexico, Roberts Bay, and Little Sarasota Bay, with its long beaches, residential canals, bridges, and principal roads, including Ocean Boulevard, Beach Road, and Midnight Pass Road.

Illustrated buildings and promotional signs identify hotels, condominiums, restaurants, shops, marinas, and real estate offices. Border advertisements and a prominent Cascade Inc., Realtors panel emphasize the map's commercial purpose. Beachgoers, sailboats, fishing boats, and marine life animate the surrounding waters, while a cartoon Neptune holds a trident near the title.

The reverse includes an indexed street map and the publisher's imprint, identifying this as the 1984 edition of a work copyrighted in 1975. Combining practical navigation with pictorial advertising, the map records Siesta Key's tourism and waterfront real estate businesses during the period.

West House of Maps was a Sarasota, Florida, publishing business owned by illustrator Harry West. Active by 1969 and documented through at least 1984, the firm produced maps of Florida's Gulf Coast communities, combining indexed streets, points of interest, business directories, and advertising. Its publications included maps of Venice and neighboring communities, Longboat Key and the adjoining islands, Manatee County, Naples, Sarasota, and Siesta Key.

Harry West's artist biography records training at Ringling College of Art & Design and the Famous Artists Schools, as well as employment with Hallmark Cards and later Lee Sports/Nutmeg Mills. A contemporary copyright registration identifies him as Harry A. West, author of the company's 1969 Venice-area map. The firm's address on its 1984 Siesta Key publication was 2431 Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota.
