DESCRIPTION: Louis Le Breton's lithograph titled "Pirogue double sous son hangar" (which translates to "Double pirogue under its shed") appears in the book "Voyage au pôle Sud et dans l'Océanie sur les corvettes l'Astrolabe et la Zélée" (Voyage to the South Pole and Oceania on the corvettes Astrolabe and Zélée). This book, published in 1841, documents the French naval expedition led by Jules Dumont d'Urville from 1837 to 1840.
The expedition aimed to explore the South Pacific Ocean and the Antarctic region. Le Breton served as a naval surgeon and artist on that expedition, creating numerous illustrations and engravings that were later included in the published account of the voyage. The engraving "Pirogue double sous son hangar" depicts a traditional double canoe (pirogue) from Oceania under a protective shed.

Louis Le Breton
(1818 - 1866)
Louis Le Breton was a French naval surgeon and painter. He studied medicine in Paris and later joined the French Navy as a surgeon, serving aboard various ships from 1841 to 1847. During his time at sea, Le Breton documented life on board through his detailed paintings and drawings, which often featured the daily activities of sailors, naval battles, and ship portraits. Some of his notable works include "The Sinking of the Vengeur" (1850) and "The Battle of Sinope" (1853).
Alongside his naval career, Le Breton received artistic training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He exhibited his paintings at the Paris Salon between 1840 and 1864, gaining recognition for his realistic depictions of maritime subjects. Le Breton was awarded the Legion of Honour in 1847 for his service as a naval surgeon. He retired from the navy in 1857 and devoted the remainder of his life to painting until his death in 1866.
