DESCRIPTION: SOLD

Small ship's track chart / nautical map of Atlantic Ocean produced by the Norddentsher Lloyd shipping company that was used by a passenger to track his progress on a Transatlantic cruise. Details the daily position and miles made good on a voyage from Sandy Hook, New Jersey to England between August 31 and September 8, 1887 with a Captain Richler. With an inset of a steamer underway.

The illustration and quotation on this trade card were not unique to John Cosgrove but rather part of a stock design widely used by 19th-century printers who specialized in producing humorous or sentimental advertising cards. Lithographers commonly kept catalogs of ready-made comic scenes—like this seaside mother-and-child vignette with the line “It’s a wise child that knows its own mother at the sea side”—which merchants could customize by adding their own business imprint below. In this case, the printer simply inserted Cosgrove’s name, trade description, and Poydras Market address into the blank advertising panel at the bottom, allowing a small New Orleans fish dealer to benefit from professionally printed imagery at a fraction of the cost of commissioning original artwork.

It was written at a moment when the work was nearly finished but paralyzed for lack of money. The six-page document pleads with northern and local investors to cooperate, arguing that the city’s real-estate holdings and the canal’s success were inseparable. Without the canal, Brunswick’s fine harbor and well-laid streets remained idle capital; with it, the authors promised, the town would spring to life and the stock of both companies would rise to par. <br><br> The letter fits precisely with newspaper reports from 1852 describing a new bond issue for the Brunswick Canal and Rail Road Company. Those public notices named D. Randolph Martin, president of the Ocean Bank of New York, as trustee for $100,000 in second-mortgage seven-percent bonds. In the private appeal, “D. L. Martin” is almost certainly the same man, acting both as financial organizer and trustee. It was part of a network of municipal markets established to supply the city’s growing population with fresh produce, meats, and seafood. Its proximity to the riverfront made it an ideal site for offloading goods brought in by boat, especially the bounty of the Gulf—shrimp, crabs, pompano, redfish, turtle, and snapper were staples of the stalls. <br><br> The market was a bustling commercial hub where independent vendors, such as John Cosgrove, rented numbered stalls to sell seasonal goods. These vendors catered to a diverse clientele that included chefs, homemakers, and restaurateurs, all drawn by the variety and freshness of the offerings.
