DESCRIPTION: Hand-colored maritime engraving on laid paper titled "Galeres," Plate 17 from Nicolas-Marie Ozanne's Marine Militaire, first published in Paris in 1762 but ca. 1770 . The upper panel illustrates two naval galleys, identified as A and B, under oars and sail. One is shown broadside with a long bank of oars; the other is viewed obliquely from the bow. Both carry lateen sails and pennants.
The engraved French text explains the galleys' lightly built hulls, speed, armament, dimensions and crews, noting that convicts, termed "chiourme," formed part of the complement. It describes their use in towing disabled warships, protecting them from capture or fireships, and making sorties against smaller vessels near ports. Their narrow construction made them poorly suited to rough seas. A decorative arrangement of clouds, crossed oars and a star completes the lower panel.
