The composition presents the fortified coastal settlements from the Mediterranean, emphasizing their walls, citadels, and protected anchorages. Nice appears at left as "Niza di Provenza," Villefranche occupies the background, and the walled Rock of Monaco dominates the right.

The coastline is compressed into a panoramic arrangement rather than depicted at a consistent scale. Sailing vessels occupy the foreground and harbors, while a compass rose, ribbon title, and four scroll-shaped German keys frame the view. Lettered references identify defenses, landing places, churches, and the Prince's Palace at Monaco. Italian place names accompany the German explanatory text, with the sea labeled in both Latin and German.

Issued in Bodenehr's <i>Europens Pracht und Macht</i>, the plate is attributed to Johann Stridbeck the Younger, with lettering and publication by Bodenehr. An early eighteenth-century depiction of the fortified Riviera, emphasizing the military and maritime character of a coastline now better known for its resorts. |

The copperplate-engraved view by Gabriel Bodenher is from the perspective of a viewer looking south into the north entrance of the Oresund. At the right are Helsingor, Kronborg Castle (Cronenburg), and Copenhagen. At left on the east side of the sound lie Helsingborg (Ellingburg), Landskrona (Lands Croon) and Malmo. Warships bearing flags of several nations are underway heading south in the direction of Copenhagen.

Gabriel Bodenher (1673- 1765) was a German map maker and member of a famous family of Augsburg engravers and publishers. Bodenher is best known for his main work, Atlas Curieux, first published in 1704. |
