$475.00Dykes--VictorScarce-Pictorial-Map-of-Marblehead-MassachusettsA scarce 1948 pictorial map of Marblehead Massachusetts. Produced by Marblehead resident Victor Sykes, the map incorporates key locations, with a few key historical facts about the area as well as a bit of Marblehead culture. The locations include:

The old powder house

Old town house - 1727

Marblehead light

Corinthian Yacht Club

Boston Yacht Club

Abbot Hall

Eastern Yacht Club

Skinner Head

Town landing

and the Neck

According to small vignette at the bottom left it was the custom for Marbleheaders to fend off members of the Salem Shags gang by hurling rocks and yelling the battle-cry "Rock 'em round the corner." Marblehead Magazine explains the practice:

"A true Marbleheader ... was once a member of the town's many gangs that took their names from the territory they controlled. There were the Redd's Hillers, Up-alongers, Down-alongers, the Barnegaters, the Ship-yarders, and the Wharf-Rats (they used beach stones). They all pulled together, however, to rebuff invasions by the Salem Shags, giving rise to the phrase "rock em 'round the corner," which meant stoning the Salemites back around the harbor corner roadway."
