Titled <i>The World of C3I</i>, the map illustrates the companies and government organizations involved in command, control, communications and intelligence (C3I), arranged within a fanciful landscape extending across the United States to Europe and Israel where west (California) is located at bottom..
<br><br>More than thirty defense, aerospace, communications and computer companies are identified by their corporate buildings and logos, including IBM, AT&T, Raytheon, Honeywell, Digital Equipment Corporation, Data General, Hughes Aircraft, McDonnell Douglas, Rockwell International, Siemens, Philips, Thomson-CSF and Tadiran. The Pentagon and CECOM are also represented, while satellites, aircraft, ships and communications installations reinforce the map's military and technological theme.<br><br>The map was produced as a promotional piece for Apollo Computer, whose facility appears prominently in the northeastern United States. The advertising slogan along the lower margin, "Go End-To-End with Apollo - the Secure Solution," promotes Apollo's computer systems to the defense and government market.
<br><br>An interesting artifact of the rapidly developing computer and defense industries of the period, the map provides a visual record of the companies participating in the C3I market at the time. Many of the firms represented were subsequently absorbed through mergers and acquisitions, making the map an evocative snapshot of the technology and defense establishment near the end of the Cold War.
